Knots in Use
This book contains a really nice
combination of colour photograph with diagram for each knot. The selection
ranges from simple figure of eight to the complexity of Jury or Masthead
knot, but these are all knots which you may encounter. (I also
liked the section on hanging coiled ropes - if you are crewing for the
first time read on.) A separate section deals with whippings, splicing
- in synthetics - and the methods for creating eye splices. There
is chapter on the breaking loads of various materials, and finally a piece
on eye splicing in light wire. This is the third edition of Colin Jarman's
excellent pocket book.
