TradBoat Book Reviews
The Light in the Glens
Another excellent book on the Clyde Puffer. Early chapters concentrate on the technical developments which go hand in hand with the development of the Scottish canals, for many of these vessels had to pass through them in normal trading. I particularly liked the block diagrams showing the the evolution of the puffer from the 1870s to the 1960s.
Having set the scene Len Paterson concentrates on the history of the principal shipping companies, in particular Glenlight Shipping. He has included nearly seventy photographs, many of early shipping and others of more recent vessels, together with pictures of some of the remote beaches and harbours on which they had to operate. The photograph of Zephon unloading to carts on the beach is particularly good, and for war time buffs there is an extraordinary photograph of a Hays boat in Scapa flow after the scuttling of the German fleet. In addition there are useful appendices.
